MSc Nutrition for Global Health – LSHTM

The Masters in Nutrition for Global
Health is a course which develops high-quality, in-depth knowledge of
nutrition from a public health perspective, so it really
trains people to be able to understand the role of nutrition in international public health. The
MSc is really unique because it offers an enormous range of skills and
training opportunities for students and it is set within the School, which is a
wonderful place for MSc learning. I did my
masters here in the early nineties and I still remember very fondly the many experiences, the seminars, the
opportunities to interact with world-class academics a on a daily basis about nutrition and about public health
in general. So the course is set within this environment which is very nurturing, students are surrounded by
world-class academics and have a great opportunity to learn. After I completed my undergraduate degree, I wanted to specialize in public health nutrition I had a look at the course details, I spoke to the Course Directors and also just the school’s reputation I knew this was the course for me. A lot of my colleagues had told me about this course and the ones who really inspired me, particularly in emergency nutrition, had gone through this course and told me
really good things about it. It seems to have quite large a reputation in the public health field abroad. So it was quite an easy choice really to pick this course. The course is aimed at people who want to understand the role of nutrition in health at a population level, so very
much at the community and population-level; what is the role of
nutrition or the consequences of poor nutrition at
a community or population-level. The course is largely delivered by
experts from the nutrition group at the London School who conduct research on maternal and
child nutrition nutrition in emergencies,
non-communicable diseases and my particular area of interest: the role of Agriculture in nutrition. The teaching was fantastic, we had lecture-based classes and we also had seminars, workshops, so a different range of teaching
methods. We had guest lecturers as well which
was a real treat to know that they were such experts in their fields and being
able to share that knowledge with us. The support was great because it’s quite
a small class size so it was quite easy to get involved. You could ask anything you wanted without feeling too stupid and you have your tutor, you have to the course director
for academic support as well and I felt like the teachers were
quite accessible, approachable, and interested in what they were teaching, so made it quite easy just to get the most out of it. The course attracts students from all over
the world and from a variety of different disciplines who want to
come and understand the role of nutrition and population health. And
these are people who might come from the NGO or civil society communities and
want to work for example in humanitarian work understanding how to deal with the
nutritional emergencies for example but also we attract people who work in
the public sector whether it’s in Department of Health in various
countries or now indeed from departments of
agriculture or departments of civil engineering who need to understand the
role of nutrition in their work. There’s also an opportunity for students
to take their skills from the course and and work in the private sector and there is an
increasing demand for nutritionists in the food industry and of course are also opportunities for
students to go on and do PHDs in nutrition. The thing to me that really made course
special was actually meeting lots of different people, making
friends, making connection and networks, and really sharing that experience. I remember really clearly the moment after the summer exams when we’d all come out of a very intense three-hour
exam, and the sun was shining, and you could actually just enjoy being outside and seeing what was ahead, that was definitely something I’ll remember.
