Perfect Post Ride Recovery | Emma’s Apple Pie Smoothie


(quaint upbeat music) – How about a recovery smoothie
that tastes like apple pie? Well, for this video in
the GCN Haute Cuisine and Nutrition series,
we’re making an apple pie recovery smoothie with,
surprise, surprise, oats. This recipe is super simple. It contains 20 grams of protein, along with complex and
fast-adjusting carbohydrates, perfect after training ride. Obviously, staring with the
most important thing, oats. 90 grams of oats, which
is about a cup full. Then we’re gonna add 250
milliliters of skin milk, 250 milliliters of cold apple juice, an actual apple, few drops of vanilla essence, and if you like them, cinnamon and ginger, and just to finish, a few
spoonfuls of low-fat Greek yogurt. First things first, I would wash an apple and just chop it up, take out the core. You don’t even need to really chop it up, you can just bung it in, in quarters. Now I don’t peel my apples because most of the nutrients are in the skin. It’s all good. So, I’ve got everything measured out, just gonna pop it all in. A few drops of vanilla essence, half a teaspoon of cinnamon,
if you like cinnamon. Obviously, if you don’t like cinnamon, just don’t use it. If you’re a fan of ginger, you could add a tiny bit of ground ginger. I love ginger. If you’ve done a long, hot ride, you could, at this point,
add a pinch of salt, but obviously you don’t have to. Apple juice. Milk. And finally, 50 grams of
low-fat, high-protein yogurt. Simple as that, bung it all
in, and now it’s time to blend. Let’s blend this baby. (blender whirring) Voila, that is a meal in a glass. If you’re in a hurry, you can drink this straight from the jug, but I
got told I had to look polite, so I’m gonna drink it from a glass. Ah, there’s actually too much, oops. Mm, yum. Now, this has got 20
grams of protein in it, 120 grams of carbohydrate. This is perfect to sip on in the hour after you’ve
finished your ride. You could actually make
it before you ride, so it’s ready for when you come back, or you can make it and
take it with you to work, or to school, so you can have
it after your commute, yum. If you like this recipe,

  1. Isn't that quite a lot of oat flakes to digest, because they swell in the stomach? Also if you do mix before the ride, it's consistency after the ride is probably different than straight from blender.

  6. ok this lady agian ,again someone from the opposite sex telling me what I have to do for my " manly moment". My post ride recovery is usually a slice of pizza and water/soda if it's lunch time or multiple pints of beer if it's late afternoon. I'm not a pro FFS..

  9. Dairy is horrible for a human to consume – Countless studies have proved this. use any other plant based milk/yogurt and this would be 10 times better for you.

  10. I just made this but used vanilla soy milk and fat free yogurt. To me, it did not taste like apple pie–at all. This may be due, in part, to the type of apple used. Since I had Pink Lady apples in the kitchen, they went into the food processor. Granny Smith apples would have been better probably, as they are sweeter and tangier than other apples. Instead of, or perhaps in addition to, cinnamon, allspice would be excellent. Addituonally, I added a bit of agave to sweeten it. But that may not have been necessary with the Granny Smith. All that aside, I enjoyed my smoothie!

  12. Will try with oat milk and free from yogurt. Cows milk is not a health food, it’s a marketing campaign and it’s making people sick.

  14. All smoothies are a no go for me, something with it's viscosity… So I stick with my oatmeal with apple sauce and a sprinkle of cinnamon on top as my oat cusine 🙂

  15. Does it really work well as a recovery drink? As far as I remember carbs in a recovery drink should be as fast as possible. But oats are not very fast as well as apple juice.

  17. This is incredible. Although I would say, if made before a workout and put in the fridge for a couple of hours to enjoy when finished, it takes on a consistency more like overnight oats. Or maybe I got my quantities wrong…. still delicious though! Thanks Emma & GCN!

  19. no cyclist should be consuming any dairy products, please use plant based alternatives, there are lots to try.
    The only beings that benefit from cows milk are… cows!

  22. Still saying "vanilla essence" but actually using vanilla extract! Please learn that these two products are NOT the same thing!
